How to Reset Honeywell Thermostat

heating installation

If your Honeywell thermostat isn’t working quite right—maybe your home feels too hot or too cold, or the screen is blank—it might be time for a reset. Resetting your thermostat can clear minor glitches, restore factory settings, and help your heating and cooling system respond properly again.

This guide will walk you through when and how to reset your Honeywell thermostat, with easy-to-follow steps for different models. Whether you’re dealing with Wi-Fi issues or an unresponsive screen, we’ll help you get back to comfort fast.

When Should You Reset a Honeywell Thermostat?

Resetting a thermostat isn’t something you’ll do often, but it can be a useful fix when:

  • Your HVAC system isn’t turning on or off as expected
  • The thermostat display is frozen or not responding
  • You’re having trouble connecting to Wi-Fi or the Honeywell app
  • You’ve moved into a new home and want to erase previous settings
  • You made schedule changes that aren’t saving

There are two types of resets:

  • Soft Reset: Clears temporary glitches without erasing your preferences or schedules.
  • Factory Reset: Wipes all settings and returns the thermostat to its original state.

Knowing which type of reset you need will depend on the issue you’re facing.

Know Your Thermostat Model First

Honeywell has released dozens of thermostat models over the years, and reset instructions vary by type. Before resetting, identify your exact model. Here’s how:

  • Check the user manual if you have it.
  • Look for the model number behind the faceplate (remove gently).
  • Open the Honeywell Home app (if you use a smart model).
  • Look on the back of the thermostat or under the battery cover.

Common Honeywell models include:

  • T Series (T5, T6, T9)
  • 1000, 2000, 4000, 6000, 7000, and 8000 Series
  • VisionPRO Series
  • Wi-Fi Smart Thermostats

Once you know your model, follow the appropriate steps below.

How to Soft Reset a Honeywell Thermostat

A soft reset is ideal for resolving display issues, unresponsive buttons, or temporary glitches without erasing settings.

For Battery-Powered Models (e.g., 1000 & 2000 Series):

  1. Turn off your HVAC system.
  2. Remove the thermostat from the wall plate.
  3. Take out the batteries.
  4. Reinsert the batteries in reverse polarity (positive to negative) for 10 seconds.
  5. Remove and reinstall the batteries correctly.
  6. Reattach the thermostat to the wall plate.

This quick trick often clears small bugs and refreshes the screen.

For Hardwired Models:

Some models without batteries can be soft reset by:

  1. Turning off the power to your furnace or HVAC system at the breaker.
  2. Waiting 30 seconds.
  3. Turning the power back on.

How to Factory Reset a Honeywell Thermostat

A factory reset will delete all settings, schedules, and Wi-Fi connections. Only perform this if necessary—like after moving into a new home, changing HVAC systems, or troubleshooting persistent errors.

T5, T6, and T9 Smart Thermostats:

  1. Press and hold the Menu button.
  2. Scroll to Reset and select it.
  3. Choose Factory Reset and confirm.
  4. The thermostat will restart and prompt you to set it up again.

6000 Series (e.g., TH6110D, TH6220D):

  1. Press and hold Fan and Up arrow simultaneously.
  2. Hold for about 5 seconds until the screen changes.
  3. Press Next until you see 39:0 on the screen.
  4. Change the number to 1 using the arrow buttons.
  5. Press Done to reset.

8000 Series:

  1. Press System on the touchscreen.
  2. Hold the center blank area for 5 seconds.
  3. Press Reset to Factory Settings when the menu appears.

Be sure to reconfigure your system type, temperature settings, and schedule after a factory reset.

Resetting Wi-Fi and Connectivity Settings

If you’re just having Wi-Fi issues or changing routers, you don’t need a full reset.

For Wi-Fi Smart Thermostats:

  1. Go to the Menu and select Wi-Fi Setup or Network Settings.
  2. Choose Reset Wi-Fi or Change Network.
  3. Use the Honeywell Home app to reconnect.

Smart thermostats often blink a specific LED color (like amber or blue) when in pairing mode. Follow the app prompts to complete setup.

What to Do After Resetting

After resetting your Honeywell thermostat:

  • Re-enter your preferred heating and cooling schedule.
  • Set the time and date, if needed.
  • Reconnect to your home Wi-Fi network if using a smart thermostat.
  • Test the system by setting the temperature a few degrees higher or lower than the room temp and listening for the system to kick on.

Take a few minutes to double-check fan settings, system type (gas, electric, heat pump), and time-based programs for energy efficiency.

When to Call a Pro Instead

Resetting your thermostat can fix a lot—but not everything. If you’re still dealing with:

  • HVAC system that won’t respond to temperature changes
  • Thermostat screen that stays blank or flickers
  • Wi-Fi connectivity that keeps dropping
  • Frequent resets that don’t hold settings
